Genesis 6 - Genesis 9: The flood
Genesis 6:1-5
Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. And the Lord said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years. There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
When God sees that all people only had evil thoughts continually, He sends a flood to destroy all of mankind. All were killed in the flood except Noah and his family who found grace in God's sight.
What does this scripture mean when it talks about the daughters of men and the sons of God?
There are all kinds of interpretations regarding this scripture. We hear stories of fallen angels having relations with women and all kinds of weird things coming out of that. Please allow me to share my own personal opinion.
Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
When God made man he made man in the image of God. So that it would be "like Father like son". It's only mankind that was made in the image of God. Nothing else. The angels were not made in the image of God. When Scripture talks about the sons of God, it is talking about human beings - man. It is not talking about fallen angels. Sons of God are those people that are led by the Spirit of God according to Romans 8:14.
Hebrews 1:5
For to which of the angels did He ever say: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You?"
And again; "I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son?"
God has never said to any angel: "You are my son". The sons of God are those that are lead by the Spirit. The Holy Spirit will always lead the people towards God's Vision. It is this group of people: from Seth's line - walking with God. They are walking in God's way towards Gods' Vision, being lead by God's Spirit.
The other group referred to in Genesis 6:2 is the daughters of men. This is the group that has gone out of God's way: the offspring of Cain.
So why does it talk about sons and daughters?
Gavin Porter suggests that it is because God is giving us a picture of a whole lot of things we find later in the Bible. You are welcome to read more about this in my post: Daughters of men. The YouTube teaching Dust and Stars offer an in-depth explanation.
In Genesis 6 we see these two groups coming together with the sons of God (those in relationship with God) taking wives from the group - daughters of men(those walking in their own way)
Every time the people go out of God's way He has to do something to bring them back into His way. When Adam goes out of the way, God slaughtered an animal and shed its blood. He covered Adam and Eve with the skins of the animal and brought them back into His way. When Cain went out of God's way he never came back but God gave Adam and Eve another son - Seth who walked in God's Way. Now there is still a group of people walking with God - Seth and his descendants. When these two groups intermarry in Genesis 6 all of the people go out of God's way again, having evil thoughts continually. It is only Noah that is still walking with God. So God sends a flood to destroy all of mankind so that after the flood it is only Noah and his family on earth. Now all of mankind is walking with God again - in God's way. So God brings mankind back into His way using the great flood.
Conversation Starters with the little ones:
When we are driving in the car, we sometimes drive down a one-way road. Will it be safe to make a u-turn and drive in the opposite direction? No! That will mean we are going in the wrong direction, which could be dangerous for us and others. Also, we won't reach our destination when we turn back.
When we walk with God in His way we choose to listen to His Voice and obey Him. This is a close relationship, keeping us safe and guiding us towards what God has for each one of us - His Plan and Purpose.
Teach them to Rule and Multiply:
We started a Biblical Timeline together. I've found that a visual aid always helps my little ones to understand a difficult concept. We made a few images such as The tree of life, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, Adam and Eve, Cain, Enoch, Enosh, Seth, and Noah. We plan to add to the timeline as we go along with the lessons.
Involve the little ones and get those creative juices flowing!
We made a horizontal line against one of our walls representing God's Vision/Way/Plan and Purpose.

Have fun explaining the two groups of people: Those walking in God's way and those going out of God's way. Let the little ones place the images where they think they must go. Either on the horizontal line (representing God's way) or underneath the horizontal line (representing those going out of God's way). We did this over a few days so that we had enough time to read every Bible reference before deciding where to place the images.

Kettle Prayer Suggestion:
Lord Jesus, please teach my children the Way of your Spirit. Let them hear Your Voice and may they always have open hearts and ears to hear You. Be the guiding light to those little feet I love so much. I give them to you Lord, for they are Yours. Amen
