Lesson 10: Walking in The Way

Writer: AnkiaAnkia

Scripture Reference:

Genesis 5:22

After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years and had sons and daughters.

Reading Guide for Mom and Dad:

In Genesis 3 we read about Adam and Eve eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The moment that they sinned they went out of God's way. God's plan and purpose never change but it is Man that goes out of His Way. God brings them back into His Way by killing an animal, the blood of the animal covers their sin. They are clothed with animal skins and they are brought back into relationship with God.

We read in Genesis 4 about Cain and Abel. They both bring offerings to God and God accepts Abel's offering and rejects Cain's offering. Cain gets angry about this and kills his brother. Cain becomes the first murderer and he goes out of God's Way. Unfortunately, there is no record that Cain comes back into God's way. In Jude 1:11 we read "Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah."

It talks about the "way" of Cain. When Cain went out of God's Way he went his own way.

In Genesis 4 we see a list of Cain's descendants. We read about Cain's descendant Lamech:

Genesis 4:23 Then Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah hear my voice; Wives of Lamech, listen to my speech! For I have killed a man for wounding me, even a young man for hurting me.

Lamech becomes the second murderer.

At the end of Genesis 4, we read that God gives Adam and Eve another son - Seth.

Genesis 4:25-26: And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son, and called his name Seth; For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos; then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.

Seth is walking with God and Seth's descendants are walking with God.

In Genesis 5:22 we read that Enoch walked with God.

We also read about the tenth descendant from Adam - Noah:

Genesis 6:9 These are the generations of Noah; Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

He was also walking with God.

Cains descendants went out of God's Way. Seth's descendants (Enos, Enoch, Noah) walked in God's Way. You can't walk with God if you are not walking in His Way. You must be walking in God's Way towards what God is leading you to.

There are two groups of people: those that are in relationship with God, walking in His Way, and another group: those that went their own way.

Romans 8:14

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

The Spirit of God will always lead people towards God's Vision. The Son's of God is this group of people that are walking with God, in God's Way towards God's Vision - being led by God's Spirit.

Walking with God is hearing His Voice, being lead by His Spirit, walking towards His Vision for us.

Conversation Starters with the little ones:

When we go for a walk in the park we enjoy each other's company. We have fun talking and sharing our thoughts. As we walk together we can also share the beauty of nature and animals and birds that we see.

Do you think that God wants you to share your life with Him? How can we do this?

Do you think we can walk with God like Noah and Enoch?

How do we talk with God and how does He talk with us?

Share with each other how God has spoken to you in the past.

Teach them to Rule and Multiply:

Create small little traditions with each of your children. This can be 10-15 minutes of special time alone with each of them. These shared moments become the glue that holds relationships steadfast when storms come. For the little ones, these moments are like beacons in a sometimes unsteady world. You are their safe place Mama/Daddy, let them experience the joy and peace of the Holy Spirit.

My son enjoys riding his bike with me. He leads the way and I follow him as best I can. He doesn't mind his mom's slow pace or that I have to push my bike over bridges and steep slopes. He doesn't say it, but I can feel our friendship growing in these moments. I do not have one athletic bone in my body but these are some of the most authentic times I've had with him.

My little girl loves musicals, just like her Mom. We've started this little tradition where we make hot chocolate and coffee as a takeaway on our way to school. Our mornings are now filled with singing our favorite songs in the car. Sometimes it is worship songs and sometimes it is songs from the 1980s! We now look forward to these 10 minutes we share each day, making silly faces and laughing together.

Kettle Prayer Suggestion:

Holy Spirit, You are our Comforter, You are our Friend. Teach us to delight in You, as we go with You. Teach my children Your Way. Let them hear Your Voice. You are our God and we are Yours. Amen
